METAL TREE SUPPORT

Technology-Driven Manufacturing

Through its casting manufacturing, Hokusei Industry Co., Ltd. has contributed to cities and daily life by supporting urban functionality and aesthetics, including infrastructure such as water/sewage systems, roads, electricity, and telecommunications, as well as tree guards and bollards. For this project, while exploring manufacturing that enhances comfort and safety in urban environments, attention turned to “street tree supports,” which have gained prominence due to recent large typhoons and heavy rainfall. By reviewing existing products made of steel pipes and converting them to cast metal products, the aim was to develop items that would improve functionality and design while better showcasing Hokusei Industry’s advanced technical capabilities.

Design Through Manufacturing Innovation

The street tree support system utilizes casting characteristics by connecting matching components produced from a single mold. The cast metal ring surrounding each tree comprises three identical parts. These cast components provide high strength and durability, featuring a mechanism that connects the parts with a single bolt while securing the oval steel pipe supports, and incorporating a structure that accommodates tree-supporting straps. These features emerged through repeated refinement, integrating various required functions and conditions while maximizing the potential of the material and manufacturing process. The design leverages casting’s unique properties to deliver necessary functionality while achieving a clean appearance that harmonizes with the urban landscape.

Designer’s voice

Hokusei Industry’s strength lies in their ability to swiftly adapt manufacturing to changing times, environments, and social needs. Through responsible development and reliable production systems for public-oriented products, they manufacture numerous items that support urban functionality and aesthetics, making broad social contributions. I believe the success of this project’s design, achieved through constructive discussions and repeated refinement, stems from their accumulated technical expertise and knowledge, combined with their commitment to manufacturing that supports daily life and creates a safe, secure society.
