Innovation in Circular Knit Manufacturing

The circular knit fabrics developed and manufactured by Monju inc. are characterized by their spiral-looped structure, unique to circular knitting machines. Combined with yarns selected for specific uses, these fabrics provide natural flexibility and comfortable stretch. While traditionally focused on clothing, especially women’s innerwear that fits close to the body, this project ventures into new territory beyond apparel. By utilizing circular knitting’s unique properties in new ways, Monju aims to create products that serve people differently. As the company’s first original brand, it represents their first step into a new business approach.

Familiar Bags, New Possibilities

The collection features drawstring bags with interconnected pouches, utilizing the flexibility and stretch of circular knit fabric. Thanks to the stretchable material, these bags offer substantial capacity and versatility for daily use, whether as inner bags or tote bags. While people commonly use various sizes of bags for travel and storage, keeping track of stored items can become difficult. This inspired the idea of finding a way to consolidate items and reduce organization stress. The ease of developing different sizes and colors adds another appealing aspect to fabric products. Although countless bag designs already exist, the project shows potential in offering solutions that align with modern lifestyles.

Designer’s voice

Fabric has been one of humanity’s longest-standing companions. Though mass production and widespread availability are relatively recent developments, nearly every possible fabric-based product seems to have been invented. The circular knit fabric created by Monju has a universal gentleness that’s felt against the skin. I was deeply moved by their serious commitment to helping people discover the appeal of this familiar material. In response to this dedication, I aimed to design the project comprehensively, using the material directly while ensuring it fits modern living and supports Monju’s future business development.
